What the check is
A duty on landlords in England to confirm a prospective tenant is allowed to rent here, made before the tenancy begins. It applies to every adult who will occupy the property as their only or main home, not only the person named on the agreement.
Share codes
Most checks now run on a Home Office share code rather than on paper documents. Record the code and the date, because the check is only as good as your ability to show you made it.
Repeat checks
Where someone has time-limited permission, the check has to be repeated before that permission runs out. The follow-up date is tracked so it appears alongside your certificate deadlines rather than living in your head.
Where it shows up
Right to Rent is one of the items in the 0 to 100 compliance score, so an outstanding check pulls the property’s score down until it is done.
